Special Issue 2027: Advancing ecohydrological process understanding in forest and agricultural catchments

Understanding how vegetation modulates water fluxes across different climatic conditions, land cover types, and seasonal dynamics is central to advancing our knowledge of the hydrological cycle. This special issue explores the application of hydrometeorological measurements, environmental tracers, ecophysiological data to investigate plant water uptake strategies and runoff generation processes in forest and agricultural catchments. We invite original research articles, perspective papers, and methodological studies that address these themes, with particular attention to the development and testing of new sampling approaches, laboratory techniques, and emerging technologies that advance process understanding. We especially encourage submissions that present unexpected results or challenge existing paradigms, as these are often the catalysts for scientific breakthroughs.

In this special issue we welcome contributions about:

  • Role of vegetation in modulating water fluxes under different conditions (e.g., dry vs. wet periods, land cover, climates)
  • Application of tracers (e.g., stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen, electrical conductivity, major ions, etc.) to investigate ecohydrological processes such as plant water uptake or surface runoff
  • Runoff generation in forest and agricultural catchments
  • Testing of new sampling approaches, laboratory techniques, and technologies to advance process understanding.
