Special Issue: Environmental challenges in the management of hydrological, agricultural, industrial and mining resources
Special issue linked to the VII Seminario Científico Internacional CON-CIENCIA: Agua y Productividad Sostenible II (June 2025, Ibarra, Ecuador) and II Congreso Internacional: Gestión Ambiental e Industrial de la Minería (September 2025, La Guajira, Colombia)
The management of hydrological, agricultural, industrial, and mining resources faces critical challenges in a context shaped by climate change and profound socioeconomic transformations. In this scenario, it is essential to address the challenges and opportunities emerging across these sectors from a multidisciplinary perspective that integrates both academic and professional approaches. Topics such as water quality, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, water governance and management, forest management, resilient agri-food systems, and sustainable industrial processes are key to advancing toward more responsible and resilient resource management aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. Particular attention should be given to the environmental and industrial management of mining, where issues such as environmental sustainability, the rehabilitation and restoration of degraded areas, Geosciences, and comprehensive environmental management are especially relevant, as they enable the assessment and mitigation of the impacts generated by extractive activities.
The topics addressed in this special issue are summarized in the following thematic lines:
- Integrated Water Resources Management: watershed hydrology and water supply, wastewater management, watershed governance, water footprint analysis, and risk management to extreme hydroclimatic events.
- Resilient Agri-Food Systems: organic agriculture, soil management and conservation, agroecological pest management, productive landscapes, management and assessment of agroecosystems.
- Sustainable Bioprocesses: technologies and bioprocesses aimed at reducing environmental impacts within industrial and productive sectors.
- Environmental Sustainability in Mining: integration of environmental, social, and economic principles throughout all stages of the mining lifecycle to ensure the long-term viability of mining projects and the preservation of ecosystems.
- Rehabilitation and Restoration of Degraded Mining Areas: design and implementation of technical and environmental plans to restore soils, water bodies, and landscapes affected by extractive activities.
- Geosciences: encompassing disciplines such as geology, geochemistry, geophysics, and hydrogeology, which are essential for understanding the dynamics of geological systems and their relationship to mining activities, as well as for environmental planning.
- Environmental Management in Mining: policies, procedures, and technical tools aimed at preventing, mitigating, correcting, and compensating for the environmental impacts caused by mining operations.
