Abstract

Javier Pérez Escohotado has recently published his edition of the proceedings of The Navarrete Trial and is currently working on the proceedings of Medra nos 's tria/ in Toledo. In this article, Mr. J.P. Escohotado proves that the charges of «Epicurean and great heretic» which public prosecutor Diego Ortiz de Angula brought against Medrana (leading to his arrest in 1530 and similar charges against others, such as Francisca Hernández, fray Francisco Ortiz, Juan de Vergara, María de Cazalla) were fa/se. In his research, Mr. J.P. Escohotado reviews Medrano's case in the light ofthe medica/ and dietary theories general/y accepted at the time ( e.g. Arnaldo de Vi/a nova, DioscóridesLaguna, Libro de Cozina by Ruperto de Nola), reaching the conclusion that thefood and other items requested by the accused during his prision term were highly recommended for his illness: tremor cordis. In an appendix, Mr. J.P. Escohotado adds a peleographic transcription of the public prosecutor's reports and Medra no 's dispatches requesting food-stuffs.
