Abstract

The author tries to offer in this paper a synthesis of those factors that have contributed, in his opinion, to the formation of the linguistic peculiarities of the Spanish language in America; in arder to do that, and by means of the appropriate bibliography, he analyzes the following aspects: a) Latín America, a marginal linguistic area; b) origin of the colonists; e) the new reality; d) native languages. It cannot be concluded afier those features that have been examined that the fragmentation of the Hispanic world is an unavoidable consequence, as the divergencies appear only in certain geographic regions and among certain social groups, as it is the case in Spain, but they seem to gel blurred among more cultured groups.
