Abstract

In different essays, Ortega y Gasset suggested the necessity of a new Linguistics, the theory of "saying", which is surprising due to its validity and current importance in its appraisals. Starting from the criticism to the limits of Linguistics conceived by Saussure, he rejects the dichotomy between langue and parole and the synchronic study of language. Based on this idea, Ortega looks for the sense of words in the "saying". This process implies some thoughts about the use of language, which are related to those done afterwards by Pragmatics and Text Linguistics. Language, as a social product, leads to shared assumptions, partly, by Critical Analysis Discourse and as, an individual product –due to the need of saying–, becomes directly related to the Philosophy of Language.
