Abstract

In the female universe of Carmen Martín Gaite’s stories, the protagonists often experience conflicts derived from their own situation in relation to motherhood. The multiple and diverse views of the maternal experience that are projected in these stories stand out remarkably and serve to complete, refine and explain other key topics of the writer, such as the erosion of routine, the lack of communication or freedom. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse in depth these female characters, whose lives or identities have been marked by the experience of motherhood, as well as to discover the connections between the variety of representations of this phenomenon in Carmen Martín Gaite’s short stories.
