Résumé

L'article étudie l'importance de “Rip Van Winkle” (Irving, 1819) dans la nouvelle américaine, ainsi que dans l'ethnographie littéraire. Tout d'abord, une comparaison est faite entre la littérature américaine classique et Irving pour déterminer les caractéristiques de la nouvelle en question. Ensuite, il est fait référence à des critiques littéraires tels que Ross, Stanley et Mengeling, qui ont étudié l'œuvre sous différents angles. Dans le cas de Ross, c'est lui qui découvre que RVW est basé sur une légende allemande de Frédéric Barberousse datant du 12ème siècle. Enfin, il y a une étude ethnographique de la société new-yorkaise du XVIIIe siècle et plus particulièrement des colonies hollandaises de cette région, appelées la Nouvelle Amsterdam. Tout cela à travers les coups de pinceau historiques que l'œuvre laisse dans son histoire inoubliable.

Joaquín José Cuéllar Trasorras, Universidad de Almería

Doctor en Humanidades por la Universidad de Almería (2015). Es especialista en estudios interdisciplinarios de Antropología y Literatura española, inglesa y americana. Autor de monográficos y artículos sobre ESL (English as a Second Language), es miembro del grupo de investigación HUM 602: Lenguaje y Pensamiento: Relaciones de significación en el léxico y en obras literarias.

Actualmente trabaja como profesor sustituto interino en el Departamento de Filología Inglesa de la Universidad de Almería
