Abstract

The "Curso superior de sintaxis española" ("Advanced Course in Spanish Syntax") by Samuel Gili Gaya is a contribution to the development of linguistic historiography not only as a reflection of the inherited tradition and the ideas that characterized an era, but rather a clear vision of the structure of language and dare we say, speech as well. Gili Gaya said that there is a need to consider a unit that, although just breaking away from the traditional limits of the sentence, is more responsive to the units real meaning and intention that conforms to the way we communicate through language. The topic of this article, compound sentences, opens the door to a broader understanding of the newness of the syntax shown in the era of Gili Gaya as the inclusion of a chapter where he explores “los enlaces extraoracionales”.
