Abstract

Not many foreign contemporary playwrights may boast of having their work translated into Spanish. As a result, playgoers are not very familiar with them and when their plays are performed on our stages, more often than not, the version offered does not entirely correspond to the original work. Being aware of the differences there may be between the two main translation strategies regarding theatre, "reader-oriented" and "performance-oriented", I confront loe Orton 's Loot (El Botín), peiformed in Spain in 1984, with my own translation to come to the conclusion that, although the version offered on stage then was reasonably loyal to the spirit of Orton 's play, so me important aspects were either omitted or not sufficiently stressed thus providing the public with a more gentle version than the original is intended.
