Abstract

This article examines the ways in which the animal, the garbage, and the residual interact in Diamela Eltit’s novel Falla humana. It hypothesizes that Eltit’s novel develops a series of characters who embody an alliance with the animal as a result of humanity relegated to the margins of the human, displaced by industrial progress as residual populations toward garbage-places. Based on a dialogue with Gabriel Giorgi’s biopolitical approach, the forms of these alliances with the animal will be studied, as well as José Luis Pardo’s conceptualization will be useful in relation to the notion of garbage and garbage-place in the novel. In this sense, a reading of the novel is proposed in which the animal operates as a sign of dispossession in the characters, which deepens an aesthetic of waste whose redefinition will be vital to articulating forms of resistance as residual communities.
