The literary magazine Escorial functioned as a propaganda tool serving the ideals of Francoism in post–Civil War Spain, instrumentalizing contemporary Italian literature in order to reinforce national‑Catholic thought. Through translations, reviews, and critical essays published in the magazine, José María Alonso Gamo introduced three major contemporary Italian poets—Salvatore Quasimodo, Giuseppe Ungaretti, and Eugenio Montale—to Spanish readers, deliberately stripping them of their historical and political context to present them instead as spiritual and ahistorical poets. The analysis reveals how Francoist censorship manipulated the cultural reception of these authors, creating ideologically biased interpretations that adapted their poetic message to the cultural canons of the regime.
