Service-Learning (S-L) brings educational benefits to students, faculty and the community in general. This article presents a comprehensive diagnostic study of the reality with a qualitative approach in which the competencies developed, the characterization of the service offered and the participatory processes of university students who carry out A-S activities are analyzed. The data collection techniques were the interview and the discussion group. The sample consisted of students, faculty and representatives of social entities. The data analysis technique was content analysis and the triangulation strategy was used between the contributions of different informants. Most of the participants are satisfied with the service offered. The students identify improvement in competencies such as: teamwork; ethical commitment; adaptation to new situations and problem solving. In relation to participation, both service and learning are conditioned by elements such as levels of participation, among others. In conclusion, it is evident that S-L constitutes a work strategy that strengthens and develops attitudes of education for citizenship by articulating activities with the community from the institutional curriculum.
