Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to important changes and demands in the educational field, which in turn appear to have negatively affected the psychological wellbeing of students. The aim of the present study, which is descriptive in nature, was to analyze the psychological impact of the lockdown in a sample of 167 university students (M=21.28 years, SD=1.70) in the autonomous community of Galicia (Spain). More specifically, the psychological impact on the students was considered in relation to sociodemographic and academic factors and the most common fears associated with coronavirus. The impact was evaluated using a Questionnaire on Basic Academic and Sociodemographic Data (ad hoc), the Coronavirus Fears Scale and a Questionnaire on Manifestations (ad hoc). The results show a significant increase in the incidence of cognitive, emotional, physical and behavioural manifestations. Academic demands and the strong fears associated with COVID-19 appeared to act as risk factors for suffering these symptoms. In light of the results obtained, the influence of gender stereotypes in the observed affectation was evaluated, along with the possible role of the lack of information and insufficient coordination in the programming of tasks given to the students. The results obtained suggest that it is necessary to follow up and implement preventive measures and psychological and educational interventions aimed at reducing the associated risk factors should be implemented.
